In recent times, battery-operated or solar-operated automobiles are also used but less as compared to fuel-driven ones. Fuels are used by automobiles as well as by some machines and equipment for the generation of energy.

Need for Proper Handling of Fuels:

The most commonly used liquid petroleum fuels like diesel, kerosene, petrol have potential dangers. These liquid fuels are volatile. They are highly inflammable and tend to catch fire immediately and spread to the surrounding areas. It is also toxic and corrosive. It harms the health and surrounding if not handles with proper care and precautions. Thus, proper care should be taken while fuel dispensing and handling.

Proper installation: The device used for dispensing of fuel should be checked properly. The connections of the device should be firm to prevent the leakage of fuel. The material used for making the dispensing device should be compatible and should sustain the pressure generated while dispensing.

Provision for fire extinguisher: The location where the dispensing of the fuel takes place should be equipped with a sufficient amount of sand and a suitable fire extinguisher to put off the fire in case of any accidents.

Emergency contact details: The site used for dispensing should mention the details of the contact person and nearby emergency areas like hospitals and fire stations. These details should be handy and easily accessible in case of emergency.

Prevent entry of ignition material: Proper care should be taken that there is no smoking material, lighter, matches, or any other substance near the dispensing area which has the potential to start any spark or fire.

Setting up of automatic fire suppression facility: Wet or dry type or sprinklers can be set up at the dispensing site depending on the surrounding area that might take charge in case of any emergency.

Enforcing good housekeeping practices: The works space should have proper space to keep the fire-fighting equipment and at easy to access location in case of emergency.
